Struck on a perforated aluminum planchet, the J-1722 was one of several annular designs by Eastman Johnson with the intention of making it easier for the blind to distinguish between smaller denomination coinage.
It's estimated that fewer than a dozen were produced in aluminum, making the J-1722 an R7 rarity. This coin has flashy fields and frosty devices, with less oxidation than is typically seen on aluminum coinage.
